Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov was on a visit to Stockholm on 16-17 May to discuss the impact of Russia’s war on regional security, Sweden’s accession to NATO and further assistance to Ukraine. Vseviov met with the secretaries general of Sweden’s Foreign Ministry and Defence Ministry and the chairmen of the foreign affairs and defence committees of the Riksdag and visited the headquarters of the Swedish Defence Forces.
Vseviov underlined that NATO and the transatlantic partnership played a key role in ensuring the security of our region, which is why Estonia welcomes Sweden’s accession to NATO. “Sweden has been a close ally to us and NATO for years, helping to reinforce our shared values and security. Estonia also values NATO’s open door policy, which contributes to the security of the entire Alliance and the Euro-Atlantic area,” the secretary general said.
In Stockholm, Vseviov also discussed further ways of helping Ukraine win the war. “We must make quick progress with the EU sanctions package and restrict oil imports from Russia because this way, all member states can directly influence how the war is financed. We must also remain committed to providing long-term assistance to Ukraine to boost their defence capabilities, and economic and humanitarian aid to reduce human suffering. We are already dealing with the war damages of Ukraine to help them rebuild their country,” Vseviov said. At the meetings, the secretary general reiterated Estonia’s firm support for giving Ukraine EU candidate country status.
Vseviov also spoke at a weekly demonstration held on Mondays at the Norrmalmstorg to show support for Ukraine.
